What is the name of the Portuguese explorer (1460-1524) who was the first European to reach India by sea?
In doing so he kick-started his country’s colonial expansion in the Orient and gave the Crown of Portugal access to the lucrative Indian spice trade without having to go through hazardous journeys through the Mediterranean and the powerful Arabian empires.
