Season 112 - Day 3 of 14

Islands and Archipelagos

This island with an area of 135 square kilometers is located in the Indian Ocean approximately 350 km south of Java and Sumatra and 1,550 km north-west of Australian mainland.
Because of its geographic isolation and limited human disturbance, the island is known for its high level of flora and fauna endemism.
The first European to sight the island was British author Richard Rowe in 1615, but it was not until Christmas Day in 1643 that Captain William Mynors gave it its present day name. Australia purchased the island from Singapore in 1958.
What is the name of the island?
