In 1703, Georg Ernst Stahl came out with a scientific theory, based on J.J. Becher's concept of 'terra pinguis', which stated that compounds like metals contained a certain substance that is released upon ignition and subsequently absorbed by the air.
This theory later led to the discovery of oxygen.
