This Italian playwright and political campaigner was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1997.
His most famous work Mistero Buffo (1969) is comprised of a series of brief monologues with Biblical themes drawn from the Biblical apocrypha.
The play was denounced as blasphemous by the Vatican.
In the 2010s, he became the main ideologue for the anti-establishment political party the Five Star Movement.
