This flowering plant native to eastern and southern Africa contains the alkaloid cathinone, a stimulant, which is said to cause excitement, loss of appetite and euphoria.
In 1980, the World Health Organization classified chewing of the plant as a drug abuse that can produce psychological dependence.
The production, sale and consumption of the plant are illegal in many countries, but it is legal to use in Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and other nations where its use is traditional.
