Story and Plot

What is the term used for an an object, device or event in fiction, that is necessary to set the plot in motion and functions as an important motivation for the characters, but at the end turns out to be largely insignificant for the story itself.
Notable examples of this plot device are "Rosebud" in Citizen Kane (1941) "the Maltese Falcon" in the 1930 Dashiell Hammett novel of the same name, and "The Holy Grail" In Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975).
Alfred Hitchcock popularized the term and used the plot device in many of his films.
