Season 99 - Day 3 of 14

Ancient Rome

In 79 A.D. Mount Vesuvius, a volcano near the Bay of Naples in Italy erupted.
The eruption buried an ancient Roman city under a thick carpet of volcanic ash, killing 2,000 people.
In 1748 explorers discovered that underneath the layer of volcanic ash the city was largely intact and it proved an important glimpse into everyday life of the ancient world.
What is the name of this important historic city?
