In 1913, this Bengali poet, composer and philosopher became the first non-European to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India's "Jana Gana Mana" and Bangladesh's "Amar Shonar Bangla", and the Sri Lankan national anthem is inspired by his work.
