"A Visit from St. Nicholas", more commonly known as "The Night Before Christmas", is a poem published anonymously in 1823. It is regarded as having had a major impact on the conception of Santa Clause from the mid-nineteenth century to today.
In addition, it has had a massive effect on the history of Christmas gift-giving. The poem was later attributed to an American writer and professor of Oriental and Greek Literature, who claimed authorship in 1837.
