Explorers and Expeditions

Named after the Portuguese explorer who discovered and first traversed it, this navigable sea route in southern Chile separates mainland South America to the north and Tierra del Fuego to the south.
It is considered the most important natural passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans and along with the Beagle Channel, it was one of the few sea routes between the two oceans before the construction of the Panama Canal.
