Which German general led the German and Italian forces in the North African campaign during World War II?
The general’s leadership established a reputation as one of the best tank commanders of the war and earned him the nickname “the Desert Fox”.
In 1944, he was implicated in the 20 July plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Because of his status as a national hero, Hitler gave him the option of comitting suicide instead of being exicuted.
He did so by taking a cyanide pill.
