This Chinese cake is traditionally eaten during the Mid-Autum Festival - one of the most important holidays in China held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar.
The most popular version of the cake is the Cantonese variant. It is a round pastry measuring 10 cm in diameter and is 3-4 cm thick. It consists of a rich thick filling made from red bean paste or lotus seed paste that is surrounded by a thin crust that contains yolks from salted duck eggs.
