The so-called Boxing Day Tsunami that killed more than 225,000 people in East Asia and was one of the worst natural disasters in human history.
Although a natural disaster of this magnitude would garner a lot of attention in western countries, the fact that many western tourists died in the tsunami made the disaster the top story for weeks on end in western media.
Western leaders like US President Bush, German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and Prime Minister of the UK Tony Blair all promised economic and humanitarian relief packages to help the afflicted countries.
