In April 1991, the final version of the painting titled The Potato Eaters was stolen in a museum in Amsterdam but was recovered 35 minutes later after the getaway car suffered a blown tire.
The painting is said to depict peasants and the artist deliberately chose coarse and ugly models as they seem to be natural.
