The battle marked a turning point in the Greco-Persian Wars as the Greek army inflicted a crushing defeat on the more numerous Persians.
According to mythology, an Athenian runner named Pheidippides ran a distance of 42 kilometers from the battleground to Athens to announce the Greek victory.
