Season 107 - Day 2 of 14
Mammalogy
Sacagawea, a girl guide long before the scouting movement existed, became famous as the guide of the Lewis and Clark expedition from 1803 to 1806.
During that expedition they were the first Europeans to encounter an animal subspecies that they gave a name that can either mean 'with grey-tipped' hair or 'fear inducing and gruesome'.
Since the animal is brown, not grey and an encounter is most definitely fear inducing, the second meaning seems most likely.
What subspecies of the brown bear did they encounter?
