This weather-related phenomenon occurs during thunderstorms when a bluish glow appears at the tips of pointed objects like ship masts or aircraft wings.
Named after the patron saint of sailors, it results from ionization in the atmosphere caused by strong electric fields.
It also shares its name with a 1985 coming-of-age film starring Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, and Emilio Estevez.
