Season 249 - Day 12 of 14

Performing Arts

Composed by Igor Stravinsky for the 1913 Paris season of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, this avant-garde ballet famously caused a near-riot during its premiere at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées.
Its aggressive rhythms, heavy dissonance, and unconventional choreography depicting a pagan sacrifice fundamentally shocked the audience and permanently altered the trajectory of 20th-century classical music.
